As we go through milestones like becoming new parents or a promotion, we need to set new expectations for ourselves. In this time of challenge- with a lot coming at us that is draining and practically tough- many of us have not taken the time to reset our expectations, causing us to feel a variety of ways, including frustration, guilt, and sadness. And we’re being tough on ourselves, feeling like we’re not measuring up because we aren’t living up to the standards we set for ourselves in a circumstance that no longer exists.

Instead of waking up each day asking ourselves, “How am I going to get by today?” or “How can I lower the bar?” what if we asked ourselves, “What is my new best?”

We would not only choose how we want to show up, we’d reframe this time from a position of strength.

How can you choose your new best?

  1. What are your top three or five values right now? Remember that values are positive or neutral, like joy, family, faith, success, community.
  2. What is the value of your work in this moment? How does it serve the world, you personally, your family, and your community?
  3. What kind of impact do you want to have on the world?
  4. What is your purpose? What are you uniquely positioned to do?

And how can you, in this moment, align how you show up and what you choose to do based on this?

The good news is that in any disruption, you have the power to choose something new. What’s it going to be? What’s your new best?
