A lot of us are going through some high stress moments right now, and many are also learning a new way of working- from home. Below are some tips for managing your stress, mindset, and self in times of uncertainty.

Some general mindset and wellness tips:

Meditation and breathing: When we’re stressed, our brains are hijacked. Breathing and mindfulness are key components to self-regulation and bringing awareness to what’s happening so we operate more intentionally. If you’ve not yet tried meditation, the Headspace app is great, or start with attentively taking a series of deep breaths.

Re-framing: Research shows that being able to re-frame negative thoughts is directly tied to happiness. Perhaps you are concerned that your kids being home from school will upend your already overpacked schedule. Or your clients will be preoccupied and unable to talk about future projects. I hear you, these are real challenges and feelings.

That said, could you re-frame? Are there opportunities for scheduling creatively, making this time with family special, delegating more chores to keep those kiddos busy, innovating offerings, trying a new virtual workshop? Ask yourself: What’s the opportunity in this moment?

Empathy: Each one of us is going to weather these uncertainties differently based on where we are in life, health, work, and more. First, have compassion for yourself and that you will manage this as best you can. Second, be curious with others about their experiences and how you might be in service to them. Consider that there are multiple small businesses in your community, or families led by hourly workers or who depend on school for meals, that may need additional support during this time. How could you play a role? (Remember, being in service is not only a nice thing to do, it makes us feel great!)

Finding some joy: When you wash your hands for 20 seconds, think of three things you’re grateful for- gratitude always overcomes worry (that’s science!). Spend 30 minutes of your previous commute time watching stand up comedy. Have a dance party. Sometimes, you gotta hustle for that joy.

And for those of us working from home for the first time:

Test work from home structures and have a dedicated space: Set a schedule, ideally have a dedicated space with a door or an area you can pack up each evening, start your day with a walk around the block or other routine, get dressed, and take a non-work lunch. Avoid working in your bedroom or bed. Reflect on what’s working and adjust accordingly.

End the workday and have a leave work routine: Put a punctuation on your day by signing off, pack away your desk, perhaps take a walk outside to run errands, and shift into being present at home.

Invest in relationships: Spend time checking in with people at the beginning of calls. Use free video services like Google Hangouts to meet face to face. Ask folks to share their new workspace with you, and you the same. Send quick notes to folks just to check in. We’re communal creatures and social distancing will take a toll on us unless we’re careful to take time for creative relationship building.

Managers- do what you do IRL: Set clear visions, be present and available, ask questions, coach, and trust that the work will get done.

What’s sparking for you? And how can we be helpful?
